Bonus Post: Light & Dark

These two ladies were a joy to watch because they were truly enjoying themselves and each other. 133-IMG_8099 As they performed on two edges of the stage I was so pleased that I was able to capture photos that seemed to capture their costume and their personalities. 152-IMG_8346 153-IMG_8350

New Friends

There was a grassy section at the music part of ArtiGras where the kids started running around and playing. They didn’t know each other but after a few moments of feeling each other out you would have never known that they had been strangers.

T and I both found this group lots of fun to watch.

Best of July

July has wrapped up and I think this has been a really good month for me.

Much of it was dedicated to bonus posts that gave a showcase of my PRIDE photographs, you can see them on my Flickr Feed.

I also highlighted the Cultures of India a performance that I was able to see. But before that at another Rochester Music festival I was able to get this portrait. I am highlighting this because it represents what I love about photographing artists and musicians. I strive to capture the moment where they forget about the audience and are lost in the music.

Then I have this shot from Silver Lake in Rochester, I love the lines that are created by the lake and the detail of the feather. IMG_3531

The very best one of the month is one of my last. It represents my style. Highlighting that which might go unnoticed. A pool of rubber ducks wearing goggles. I managed to get such a perfect angle with only one “looking” dead on. You can see the rest of my Fair photos on my Flickr Feed.

Cultures of India – Music & Dance “Movement”

I had an opportunity to witness an incredible performance of music and dance from India. They covered “North, East, South and West” through music, song and dance. There were so many images that are worth sharing I’m breaking it down into smaller pieces, so stay tuned.

Today’s installment is all about the movement – so many of the songs were expressions of love and joy and it came out in the movements of the artists.

Cultures of India – Music & Dance “In The Moment”

I had an opportunity to witness an incredible performance of music and dance from India. They covered “North, East, South and West” through music, song and dance. There were so many images that are worth sharing I’m breaking it down into smaller pieces, so stay tuned.

There is a moment that comes in all really good performances where the artist is no longer totally aware of the audience. For a moment they are one with their chosen performance. It may be with the music, the dance, the instrument. The audience no longer matters they are doing something they love. It is a deeply personal moment where the love for their craft comes through so completely that the forgotten viewer cannot help but be carried away.
As a photographer I LIVE for those moments – because although the artist does not know it we share that secret personal moment. I am lost to everything but the images before me and nothing matters but what is in my lens.

I also want to share that beauty with others so that they too can see the inner beauty I can see.

This is why I so often love to capture musicians preparing – because they gather their instruments and caress them as they prepare to engage the instrument. Dancers stretch and prepare their body. The artist is unaware of the audience and is not performing.

And during the performance I watch with the camera at hand hoping that they will forget about me and just become one with the music. IMG_85952 Cultures of India - music and dance 6-26-2013 11-54-37 AMCultures of India - music and dance 6-26-2013 12-24-58 PM Cultures of India - music and dance 6-26-2013 12-30-04 PM

Cultures of India – Music & Dance “Portraits”

I had an opportunity to witness an incredible performance of music and dance from India. They covered “North, East, South and West” through music, song and dance. There were so many images that are worth sharing I’m breaking it down into smaller pieces, so stay tuned.

Today we are exploring a few portraits of the artists that graced the stage. I have to admire the courage – and I am deeply grateful for sharing their culture.
